Monetising citizen journalism
Post what you see. If a newsroom licenses your footage, you get paid.
How it works
- Download the Yapp app and post photos and video of what is happening near you. Posting is free and you can stay anonymous.
- Subscribe inside the app to switch on monetisation. Subscriptions are bought through the App Store or Google Play, so there is nothing to sign up for on this website.
- Newsrooms browse Yapp and licence the footage they want. When yours is licensed, Yapp buys it once from you, for a set fee, and you are paid.
Terms of being monetised
Summary terms. The full legal terms are in the app Terms and Conditions, which apply to every contributor.
- Who can be paid. Only app subscribers. Non-subscribers can post but their footage is not paid for.
- Your footage. You must have taken or filmed it yourself and have the right to share it. Do not post footage that identifies private individuals unfairly, shows graphic harm, or breaks the law.
- What you are paid. Starting rates, under review and subject to change: £10 per photo; £10 to £30 per video depending on quality and length; the clips in one story share a £50 pool pro rata. Approved professional contributors have separate rates, paid per sale, and must apply with proof of a substantial ongoing interest in media.
- Payouts. The minimum payout is £100. Earnings expire if not paid out within 12 months.
- No guarantee. Payment depends on a newsroom choosing to licence your footage. Examples above are not a promise of earnings.
- One-off purchase. Yapp buys footage once. Newsrooms and Yapp may then use and licence it.
- Tax. You are responsible for any tax on what you earn.
- Anonymity. You can stay anonymous publicly; we may need payment details to pay you.
- Changes. We may update rates and terms, and may refuse or remove footage that breaks the rules.
